Evaluation Dutch Gambling Authority: more public value through addiction prevention
November 14, 2017
On November 9, the Dutch minister of Justice and Safety sent the Evaluation of the Dutch Gambling Authority to Parliament. The evaluation was carried out by a team of Dutch scholars including profs. Judith van Erp (UU) and Sandra van Thiel (RU). Their main conclusion was that the Gambling Authority has much to gain by intensifying its efforts to coordinate the prevention of gambling addiction. The Gambling Authority plays a valuable role in prevention of organized crime and money laundering. Its legitimacy and performance in consumer protection however are hindered by the delay in parliamentary acceptance of a new law that regulates online gambling – currently, the Gambling Authority only has jurisdiction over landbased gambling.
